Meta's Stealth Play: "Forum" App Signals Aggressive, AI-Driven Expansion

Meta has quietly rolled out a new stand-alone application named "Forum," designed as a dedicated space for Facebook Groups. This move, first spotted by social media consultant Matt Navarra, comes without an official announcement from the tech giant, a pattern becoming increasingly familiar with Meta's recent product launches.

Forum is described by Meta as "a dedicated space built for deeper discussions, real answers and communities you care about." Upon sign-in with a Facebook account, it loads a user's existing groups, profile, and activity. Users can post using a nickname, and the content shared within Forum is also visible in their linked Facebook groups. The app's feed prioritizes group conversations, aiming to showcase "what real people are saying, not just what's trending."

Significantly, Forum integrates AI heavily. It features an AI-powered "Ask" tab designed to compile answers from discussions across groups, and an admin AI assistant to aid group administrators in managing discussions and moderating content. This AI focus aligns with Meta's broader strategic push.

This isn't Meta's first foray into a dedicated Groups app; a similar effort launched in 2014 was ultimately shut down in 2017. The current re-engagement with a stand-alone groups platform suggests a renewed focus on community-centric engagement, potentially as a counter-move to platforms like Reddit.

Forum's quiet debut follows a few weeks after The Wall Street Journal reported on CEO Mark Zuckerberg's internal comments to employees. Zuckerberg, alongside Chief Product Officer Chris Cox, reportedly discussed the ambitious goal of building "50 new apps." This strategy is already visible in Meta's recent output. Just last month, in April 2026, Meta launched "Instants," an app for sharing disappearing photos with Instagram friends, borrowing ideas from competitors like BeReal and Snapchat. Prior to that, in 2025, Meta Edits launched, widely characterized as a direct copy of ByteDance's CapCut.

Meta's current strategy appears to lean heavily on rapidly deploying new applications, often mirroring features popular on other platforms, and leveraging AI to streamline development and functionality. The company did not immediately return TechCrunch's request for comment on Forum, leaving its wider availability and long-term strategy somewhat opaque for now.
